Here is a question we got from somone watching our YouTube video -Alkaline Diet Chart

Q. - Jeff, I downloaded your chart. I’m suffering big time with GERD. I just got off prilosec after 15 years. I’m 38 and I feel like I’m 90 years old. the biggest problem is my addiction to cigarettes and nicotine. Now one thing I want to ask. Where do you get protein on this diet?

I tried raw for a while, well mostly raw and I lacked protein and I slipped into a major depression.

Protein > amino acids > seratonin > good mood

So I want to start this again and get off sugar first, then cigarettes. What do you suggest regarding the protein. I heard that mushrooms have a lot of protein, but that’s just what I heard, not what I know.

Any help is appreciated.

A. I can see why you slipped into depression. It’s not wise to completely eliminate meat from your diet. You are not the first person to suffer from negative consequences, by going on a vegetarian diet. Meat has a lot of health benefits besides just being a great source of protein. For one thing, there is not a good plant source of vitamin B12. Flesh foods are a good source. It is also difficult for some types of people to keep a balanced blood sugar without meat. Their bodies just run better on the mix of fuel provided by the fat and protein found in animal foods.

The dey here as always is balance. Generally you want to eat a lot more vegatbles and fruits than you would meat. Load up the diet with 50-80% raw, organic vegetables. Then tack on a lesser amount of meat, beans, nuts, eggs. Some cooked vegetables are ok too.

Another important point is the quality of the protien source. Grass fed, organic beef is vastly differnet than supermarket hamburger. I get some great stuff from my local farmer’s market. Check out the health food store. Stay far away from most proccessed foods, like hot dogs, lunch meat and so on.

For Furthur Reading Check Out:

This guy is right on the money when it comes to detox. I have done fasting, juicing and all that kind of stuff in the past. After seeing my holistic MD, he turned me on to the idea of using clean protein. I added to that lots of veggies for a great little cleanse routine, I can do anytime, without feeling terrible like with fasting.

Well, since the beginning of time actually. Some people may think that the alkaline diet is just another fad diet, but nothing could be further from the truth.

Our stone age ancestors, also known as hunter gatherers, lived on a diet consisting of largely the fruits and vegetables that they could gather up, and smaller amounts of meat obtained from hunting. A natural alkaline forming diet. This diet was rich in minerals, a key factor in maintaining alkaline balance.

It’s only with the advent of modern food processing, increased consumption of sugar and artificial sweeteners, greater reliance on grains and an overall increase in junk food that has swung the pendulum to the acid side of the scale.

I personally focus on a more natural diet, truly fit for human beings. The benefits are clear enough to me, increased energy, mental clarity and a loss of nagging health problems.

In the last few tips we’ve been talking about reducing stress and ways to make your body impermeable to stress. Well OK, maybe not impermeable, but at least reduce the harmful effects of stress on the mind and body.

When you are under stress, you tend to burn up more nutrients. Vitamin C, B vitamins and other nutrients are used up more rapidly when we are under stress. We need these nutrients to help us handle stress effectively.

A top quality multi-vitamin mineral supplement is a good place to start to ensure we are getting sufficient nutrients. Some people may need more than this, and we’ll discuss more specific nutrients in future tips. I want to stress - top quality - when it comes to multi vitamins. Not all supplements are created equal. I have actually seen products with artificial coloring - hardly a health promoting nutrient. In fact just the opposite.

If you would like to try a sample of the formula that I personally take go here:

One of the easiest and most enjoyable ways to improve your digestion is to simply relax while eating. Take time to really enjoy your food. Make note of the taste, the smell, the texture. Enjoy the company of the people you are eating with. Chew your food a few extra times before swallowing.

Whenever you are under stress, digestion is put on the back burner. The body considers digestion a low priority under a stressful situation.

Try this simple tip: If you are feeling stressed when it’s time to eat, close your eyes, give thanks for the food and take a few deep breathes. This will help your body and mind to relax and may help the digestive process work better.

Digestive overwork -

When you sit down to a meal do you eat more than your digestive system is able to comfortably handle? Did you know that if you over-eat you put extra burden on your acid, enzyme and bile secreting systems? Eat enough to nourish and satisfy, but try to avoid the - all you can eat and then some syndrome. This may lead to more energy and improved nutrient absorption.

Underpaid -

Are you eating food that is dense with nutrients, like vitamins, minerals, anti-oxidants and health promoting compounds? Many people eat lots of food, but not much nourishment. Remember, garbage in - garbage out. Don’t subject yourself to malnourishment, despite eating plenty.
